Why Are We Here?

Did you ever stop and ponder this very profound question? This may be regarded by some as a subject that is outside the scope of a website like this, and others may look on it as a subject to be avoided – just “chill out and have a good time”.

But it affects everyone – is that not so? In the hustle and bustle of your daily life and the hurry that everybody seems to be in, you may not have given this much thought. I know that I was not concerned about it for many years until something happened that changed my outlook (hint – I am a Christian). It is a subject worth considering and meditating on, because it will ultimately determine how we approach our lives, our careers and our relationships with each other.

If you give the matter some thought, a question that you may well ask is “what is the point?”. What is the point of it all – all the struggle, the strife, the to and fro of mankind from year to year? And where do we start to define the existence of man on the earth? Is it really plausible that somehow, we came to this stage of human development after some random, explosive event in the far reaches of space?

But I don’t want to start a debate about ‘how we got here’ at this stage. Because I believe the biblical account of the creation, I am fully persuaded about that, but not everyone reading this will be of the same mind. The fact of the matter is, we are here and the question at hand is “why?”.

Of course this question has engaged the minds of philosophers and scientists for centuries and has resulted in much discussion and conjecture over the years. It’s not a subject that can be summarised in a blog post, or even many posts. But you would have to agree – it’s a very interesting subject to engage the mind in. I believe that, although it is a simple question (such as a child might ask their parents), the answer is not easily arrived at. Nor is it something that can be dismissed as if it did not really matter. If we know the answer to it, we can answer many other profound questions such as “what is the meaning of life?” and “where are we going?”.

Is it a test of some kind? Is it an experiment by some entity? You may say – “That’s absurd - Why does it have to be any of these – maybe we just sort of ‘happened’ ”. But I would reply that that your idea is much more absurd. Nothing happens without a reason. The universe is filled with the results of “cause and effect”. You can’t get away from this – I do not subscribe to any sort of “chaos theory”. If chaos was in operation in our world, it would soon disintegrate into a crumbling ruin.

We must ask ourselves why we are here, and we must settle it in our minds. Otherwise, our lives cannot have any meaning.
